Parametric structures- P3 Workshop / P3 Pavilion

Parametric modelling is a way to create structure by defining its parameters and rules. Laws are settled and algorithms written: and the structure reveals itself almost independently and naturally. The mathemathical and physical order is applied for the designer's plans.

Student club "KAT" on Technical University of Lodz, of which we are active participants and co-organisers, held workshop on parametric design and prototyping. The aim was to design and build a fully parameterized 1:1 scale Pavilion.

Magnetic fields was used as a plan. Then, lines were treated as flexible strings and force was applied to them. Whole structure was extruded, similiar to Gaudi's catenary experiments in Sagrada Familia design.

Second part of algorithm divided whole shell into the triangulated mesh and applied precise connections and numbers to every module. All parts were then nested and printed on CNC.

We- Piotr Kluszczyński and Aleksander Dynarek- created beginner and medium difficulty tutorials for Rhino and Grasshopper for future participants. Then we all participated among 30 other collegues in our projects. First days of our workshops we all learned more from Sebastian Bialkowski, Aleksander Kalachev and Tudor Cosmatu. Next days, we divided in small groups and worked on individual projects to compare ideas.

We built the pavilion near our institute, in an opened space. It took few weeks to finish, but afterwards we held a party with DJ Bombchen and VJ FKS videomapping.

Recently we are helping as tutors and assistants on second P3 Workshops with Sebastian Białkowski.
